I've heard it said:

For every door that closes, another opens.

And:

Turn every stumbling block into a stepping stone.

Not to mention the old standard:

Every dark cloud has a silver lining.

But what I really hate being said to me is this:

          When Life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

That's stupid, I know it's a metaphor but I'm allergic to lemons--- I can die an anaphylactic death from lemons and so I prefer to say this------

When life gives you lemons, squirt them in the eye.

Oooh and this I have to say for myself, I said this one to a friend of mine---Friend: "well, look on the bright side, you know, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade"
ME: "I'm allergic to citrus"
Friend: "well, look on the bright side, you know, when life gives you lemons, swell up and die"

As you go about your daily life, you will encounter many lemons. Sour expressions, sour attitudes, sour auras! The good thing is that if you don't want to be a lemon, you don't have to be! Just don't let those lemons rub themselves all over you! And you don't even have to save them! Let lemons be lemons! One of the most important things that I have ever learned, is that I don't have to save people.

I must say that I really major-league resent people who try to suggest that misery brings something positive into your life like it makes you a better person, or makes you stop and sniff the roses or something equally trite. What complete and utter blithering nonsense. That's like saying "When your stock portfolio crashes, at least you can save money by using the stock certificates to wallpaper the bathroom". Give me a break.

Another aphorism that comes into my mind as I try to deal is:

Life wasn't meant to be easy.

I remember the former Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Fraser, saying this in Parliament in response to an opposition member's statement that Mal's politics weren't making life easy for the poor.

But in the end I say---

Life wasn't meant to be easy. But it also wasn't meant to be this hard.

People have to face regrets. Becoming mature means learning to accept what you cannot change, facing unresolved sorrows and learning to love life as it really happens, not as you would have it happen. When someone attaches unkindness to criticism, she's angry. Angry people need to criticize as an outlet for their anger. That's why you must reject unkind criticism. Unkind criticism is never part of a meaningful critique of you. Its purpose is not to teach or to help, its purpose is to punish. Life isn't supposed to be an all or nothing battle between misery and bliss. Life isn't supposed to be a battle at all. And when it comes to happiness, well, sometimes life is just okay, sometimes it's comfortable, sometimes wonderful, sometimes boring, sometimes unpleasant. When your day's not perfect, it's not a failure or a terrible loss. It's just another day.
